Does Waxing Hurt?

Is this a question that you commonly get asked prior to a waxing service? It is a great question and one of the most common questions often asked prior to a client booking a waxing service.

There are many ways to answer this question, but it is important to be completely open and honest. It doesn’t have to hurt. Will there be some feelings that aren’t so comfortable? Perhaps. But as a trusted Waxologist, it is up to you to try and minimize any discomfort or redness that may occur as a result of waxing.

So how do you do this?

1) Use the Right Wax on the Right Area– At LYCON we recommend a Hard (Hot) Wax for all sensitive area waxing which includes bikini, Brazilian, Facial and Underarm waxing. You may even want to use it around the neck area when doing a male back. The reason for this is that Hard wax will be a bit more gentler on the skin with a very reduced potential for skin drag or lifting of the skin. Additionally with the Hard wax, LYCON recommends the use of a Pre-Waxing Oil which will add an extra barrier of protection to the skin and increase the comfort level for the client while decreasing any redness or irritation. Strip Wax is perfect for larger area waxing such as legs/ arms and back. Using a combination of both types of wax will allow you to tailor your waxing service to the needs of the client and ensure they leave feeling hair free and comfortable.

2) Pre/ Post – The use of Pre/ Post products is just as important as the wax itself. Ensuring that the products you choose are of high quality and have ingredients meant to soothe and protect the skin will allow provide a more comfortable waxing experience. LYCON’s has a variety of products to choose from. A few of our top rated products are the LYCOtane Cleanser which is excellent for prior to the wax and immediately after to close the hair follicles. The use of a cleanser will help to reduce redness and minimize and post waxing irritation. Additionally the Pre-Waxing Oil is recommended with all Hot waxes to add an extra layer of moisture and barrier of protection to the skin. It can also be used on extra dry skin with our Strip wax. Tea Tree Soothe lotion is one of our most popular after care lotions as it has Tea Tree in it which is anti-bacterial and excellent for soothe the skin post waxing. It is very light and can be used on any area of the body.

3) At Home Care- Educating your client on the importance of at-home care is extremely important in order to ensure that they are taking care of their skin in between waxing treatments. Exfoliation will help to allow the hair to poke through the skin easier and therefore minimize the chances of getting ingrown hairs. If you have a client that is prone to ingrown hairs, you can recommend a targeted treatment such as any of the products from LYCON’s Ingrown-X-It line which all have salicylic Acid, Allantoin and Arnica as active ingredients. Not only is at-home care important in order to minimize pain during the waxing service, but it is also a great way to increase you revenue through selling retail products.
