What Do You Do If You Accidentally Drop Wax On Eyelashes or Eyebrows?
It is a Waxologists worse nightmare! Dropping hot wax on eyelashes or the eyebrows when doing an eyebrow wax. However, it does happen so what should you do when it does happen?
There are a few things that can be done when this happens as well as some steps you can take beforehand to hopefully avoid it happening again.
What to do if wax is dropped on EYELASHES:
1) Do NOT panic! If you do drop wax on the eyelashes, try and stay calm and do not panic (which you will want to do no doubt). Take a breath and calmly remove what wax you can off the eyelashes with your fingernail. Your fingernail is the quickest and easiest thing to use to get the wax off before it sets. Ask your client to close their eyes a little tighter than normal and ensure you are very careful when scraping the wax off quickly. Try and be as gentle as possible without opening the lower eyelid so you can avoid wax going into the eye.
2) Freeze- If there is wax that remains on the eyelashes after you have attempted to gently scrape away what you can, a great option is too freeze this wax with an ice cube. Once the wax is frozen it should crack off. You can use an ice cube and carefully hold it to the wax on the eyelash. Putting a cotton pad under the bottom lashes will allow you to apply the ice for longer on the lashes. This needs to be done with care as to minimize taking any lashes with the wax as you crack it off.
3) Warm Water- Another way is to use warm to hot water on a cotton bud and then wipe the wax off with the cotton bud. It is important to talk to the client and to reassure them that the wax will come off. Ensure that the water is not too hot and will not burn the client in any way. The wax should eventually wipe away, but you will need to have patience to remove it all. Wipe downwards away from the eyelid skin.
What to do if wax is dropped on EYEBROWS:
1) Stop Immediately- If you drop or overrun some wax on the eyebrow it is important to stop the wax application immediately and scrape the overapplied wax off the eyebrows and away from the eyebrows.
2) Freeze- You can then use an ice cube to freeze the overapplied wax and crack it off. Then you can clean the rest of the wax off with Pre-Waxing Oil. You can rub the oil and the wax stuck in the eyebrow between your fingers working the wax out. Again have patience!
Precautions to take to avoid it happening in the future:
1) Concentrate- Try to concentrate when applying the wax to the face area. Especially around the eyebrows. It is nice to chat with your client, but sometimes too much chatter can cause a distraction. Without being rude, try and reduce how much talking you are doing as you apply the wax. Try and talk in between patches drying or at the end when you are applying the final finishing lotion. Additionally, it may be a good idea to try and ask politely that your client not talk as you apply the wax. Talking and facial expressions can cause the skin to move and even your clients whole face which can create an accident. Having fun and laughing with clients is great, but it can certainly be a problem when working on eyebrows and eyelashes.
2) Positioning- One good way to avoid the wax dripping on the client is to keep one hand under the wax when you take it to the face or eyebrows, so if the wax drips, it will drip on your hand and not on the client, or on their clothes or hair. A good way to prevent wax from dropping off the waxing spatula is to turn the spatula around, still over your hand, so the wax stays on the spatula and is less likely to drop off the spatula. I have dropped some on head hair and that is a lot easier.
Remember stay calm! It is important that you also explain to the client what you are doing and why.
